CFS crews have stopped a spreading grass fire in the Adelaide Hills as the state suffers under extreme temperatures.

Firefighters responded to the blaze which had started just south of Mount Torrens about 3.20pm on Wednesday.

It is believed that the grass fire was sparked by the alleged illegal use of an angle grinder during a total fire ban.

The angle grinder was placed on the back of a trailer and was being used to cut up poles when sparks from the power tool spread to the grass below and ignited the fire.

“A fire got going by a person doing something stupid,” local resident Roger Juers told 9News.

About 40 CFS volunteers worked to contain the fire with support from National Parks and Wildlife SA and Farm Fire Units.

Firebombers also lent a hand in stopping the fire.

Firefighters remained on the scene into the evening to actively monitor and extinguish any hot spots.

Fire crews also attended the scene of a grass and stubble fire at Auldana in the city’s eastern suburbs about 5pm on Wednesday.

The Wilmington blaze which started last week and saw a volunteer firey severely injured continued to burn with nearby crews also providing support.
