A host of the state’s top legal minds, as well as up and coming barristers, will be part of one of the longest murder trials in South Australia which has sent ripples through trial listings across the courts.

Five King’s Counsel – the honorific given to barristers at the top of their field – will appear during the trial of eight men for the murder of Jason De Ieso.

Elite prosecutor Jim Pearce KC is leading the state’s case against the eight men.

Mr Pearce has been at the head of multiple murder trials, including the high-profile trial of Geoffrey Adams for the cold-case murder of his wife, Colleen, in 1973.

Backing up Mr Pearce is a host of experienced prosecutors including Melissa Wilkinson, Rebecca Gray and Ryan Williams.

Facing them from the other side of the bar table is a who’s who of the criminal bar.

Marie Shaw KC, one of the state’s top barristers, was forced to step down from defending Husain Alzuain due to a timing clash.

Replacing Mrs Shaw is Winston Terracini KC, a NSW silk billed as one of the country’s top defence barristers.

Mohamed Alzuain is represented by Grant Algie KC, a prominent SA barrister who has been involved in multiple murder trials.

Daniel Jalleh is represented by experienced barrister Lindy Powell KC, Ross Montgomery by Ellie Mansfield, while Seywan Moradi has retained the services of Bill Boucaut KC, who has squared up against Mr Pearce across the bar table on multiple occasions.

Musa Alzuain is represented by Andrew Fowler-Walker, Kyle Pryde by Nick Healy and Nicholas Sianis by Michael Jandy.

Many of the accused have also retained junior counsel to assist their primary barristers through the long trial, including Edward Jolly, Sam McDonough, Alex Panousakis, Jeff Powell, Catherine Voumard, Joseph Henderson and Kathryn Waite.

The trial has acted as a blackhole of legal counsel, drawing barristers away from the shorter trials in the District and Supreme Court which are often their bread and butter.
