Fire ban on Eyre Peninsula, as Riverland floods and metro records season high temps

South Australians are being warned of fire danger towards the west, while towns on the east are being submerged in flood waters. While in Adelaide there’s sunshine and a chance rain.

A total fire ban has been issued for the Eastern Eyre Peninsula, meanwhile areas in the Riverland are underwater.

The Bureau of Meteorology said extreme fire danger is forecast for the region in response to extreme fresh to strong and gusty north to north-easterly winds combined with a hot and dry air mass.

After a warm night that didn’t drop below 19C, Adelaide should reach a partly cloudy high of 33C with the chance of a shower this afternoon, especially in the Adelaide Hills, as a cool change sweeps in.

“There is a bit of cloud around and a slight chance of a shower and possibly even a rumble of thunder during the afternoon and evening on Tuesday with a higher chance on Wednesday,” Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Simon Timcke said earlier this week.

The warmer nights will stick around towards the end of the week as top temperatures are not expected to drop below the mid-low 20s.

However, the burst of summer weather could be short-lived as more showers are expected to return by the weekend.

It comes as two Watch and Act messages remain in place for the lower and upper catchments of the River Murray.

Flows at the border are currently at 89GL per day and are expected to reach 135GL per day by early December.

As the higher flows move into the warning area over the following three weeks it will raise the River Murray to moderate flood level.

While flooding is expected to be in low-lying areas of the flood plain within the warning area, the high flow in the main river channel will pose a risk to public safety and also could impact infrastructure along the river, such as power and waste disposal.

The high flow in the main channel will make conditions dangerous for people undertaking activities on or in the water.

The force of the current, submerged objects and floating debris will all present a risk to safety.

While, backwaters, lakes and other parts of the river away from the main channel are likely to be less impacted by the high flows and visitors to the area are encouraged to consider this when planning their activities.

The alerts advise residents to follow personal emergency plans, move items of value to a safe place and only leave the area if there is a clear path to a safer location.

Premier Peter Malinauskas will travel to the Riverland on Tuesday to oversee flood preparation and meet with anxious tourism operators.

It comes as flood waters have inundated parts of Loxton in the state’s east.

South Australia got a taste of summer weather over the weekend, however the sunny skies and balmy nights will be short-lived.

The work week began with a mild “low” of 17C at 6:45am in the CBD on Monday and is expected to reach 33C today.

The warmer temperatures will also extend into the regions with Port Augusta forecast to reach 35C and moving south Mount Gambier will hit 29C.

However, Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Simon Timcke said the rain could return by mid week.

“There is a bit of cloud around and a slight chance of a shower and possibly even a rumble of thunder during the afternoon and evening on Tuesday with a higher chance on Wednesday,” he said.

The warmer nights will stick around towards the end of the week as top temperatures are not expected to drop below the mid-low 20s.
