Adelaide City councillors have unanimously supported road safety improvements outside a top private city school, following a horrific collision involving a mother and young student last year.

The council launched a review into safety concerns outside St Aloysius College after the woman became trapped underneath a 4WD and her six-year-old daughter was injured in June.

At the time, witnesses told The Advertiser the pair had crossed the road to the Wakefield St school during morning peak-hour traffic when they were struck.

The safety review into St Aloysius College was tabled at Tuesday night’s meeting and recommended the council install flexi-posts to stop illegal U-turns on Angas St.

The report also proposed a median closure on Wakefield St and for the council to apply to the Transport Department to extend the school zone.

The works will now be considered as part of the 2024-25 budget process.

Lord Mayor Jane Lomax-Smith said the safety of students in the city was of paramount concern for the council.

“No one wants to see our students, as well as parents, caregivers and school staff, involved in accidents, so this is a critical piece of work for the city,” Dr Lomax-Smith said.

“It’s practical road safety changes like these that can save lives and I thank our administration for undertaking the work to date.”

St Aloysius College principal Ms Paddy McEvoy said they were “grateful to have input into the report and we look forward to improved safety around the college as a result of our collaboration with the council”.

The recommended changes were not expected to result in a significant impact to vehicle travel times. The council will expand the safety to review to all other schools within the council area.
