The northern suburbs is set to have its first premium hotel open its doors this year as the developers announce a premium rebrand and expansion.

Originally announced by IHG Hotels & Resorts, Pelligra Group and ONE7 as a 130-room Holiday Inn & Suites hotel, the Mawson Lakes development on the corner of Elder Smith Rd and Main St has “undergone a transformation” into a Crowne Plaza.

The development will now feature 155 rooms, three meetings spaces across 442sq m, a fitness centre and a bar and restaurant, all a short walk from public transport links at the Mawson Lakes Interchange.

Early estimated by the Pelligra Group anticipated 450 jobs created during the construction of the building and 55 ongoing roles after opening.

IHG said the $60m hotel was now positioned in the “upscale space, with higher-than-anticipated demand coming from corporate, leisure and conference and event customers”.

Because of this, IHG said the hotel had been “elevated” as Crowne Plaza Mawson Lakes to reflect the higher-end quality of the build and demand driven by the meetings and events space.

The eight-storey building is set to open in late 2024, more than six years after the original developer, Barbaro Builders and Developers, suspended construction amid a Consumer and Business Services (CBS) investigation into licence conditions.

Barbaro had completed two to three levels of structural work before abandoning the site and leaving an eyesore on one of the major gateways into the suburb.

Later in 2018 the abandoned construction site was taken over by Melbourne developer Pelligra Group and joint venture partner ONE7 Developments.

ONE7 Director Bruno Muscatello said that they were “immensely proud” to announce the arrival of the globally renowned hotel brand, Crowne Plaza, to the “vibrant Mawson Lakes precinct”.

“This landmark addition not only signifies a momentous milestone for our company but is also a testament to our commitment to enhance the fabric of this thriving community,” Mr Muscatello said.

“Creating a fusion of world-class hospitality with the dynamic energy of Mawson Lakes is set to produce a synergy that will not only elevate the local business and leisure landscape, but also contribute to the flourishing growth of this exceptional precinct.”

Pelligra Group Chairman Ross Pelligra said they were proud to already operate a number of IHG hotels across the country including Crowne Plaza Carlton also set to open later this year.

“Now we’re excited to be expanding our IHG brand portfolio to include our second Crowne Plaza in Adelaide,” he said.
