A major hotel brand is planning to build a $100m luxury hotel at the Barossa Valley, overlooking its stunning vineyards and rolling hills.

IHG Hotels on Wednesday announced a plan to open InterContinental Barossa Resort & Spa near Lyndoch in 2028 – saying the 150-room resort would be the Barossa’s first globally branded luxury hotel.

An IHG statement said the hotel would also include a 130-seat “signature restaurant showcasing Australia’s finest flavours and culinary experiences with a contemporary edge”.

The statement said each guest room would offer views of the stunning local landscape, including rooms with balconies overlooking vineyards and cellar doors.

The hotel’s amenities are set to include a pool, day spa, fitness centre and extensive conference and meeting spaces for events.

Tourism Minister Zoe Bettison said the hotel was an exciting proposed development for tourism in the Barossa and for South Australia.

“What is clear is that the Barossa needs more luxury accommodation to attract interstate and overseas guests who are seeking high-end, authentic Barossa experiences,” she said.

The government said construction of the resort was subject to planning approval and would create more than 350 jobs and 120 ongoing jobs upon completion.

Once operating, it would create $70m to $100m in annual economic benefits to the region.

IHG Hotels Australasia managing director Matthew Tripolone he was excited to bring the InterContinental brand to the Barossa.

“Underpinned by stunning architecture and complemented by one of the world’s most recognised brands, InterContinental Barossa Resort & Spa will be the perfect destination for wine lovers, gastronomes, and luxury escapists,” he said.

IHG has 22 “luxury and lifestyle” hotels in the Australasia Pacific region, including InterContinental Adelaide.

It comes as the state government announces free bus services for the Barossa’s AFL Gather Round matches.

The hop-on, hop-off bus servies will operate throughout the Gather Round, with three dedicated Barossa loops connecting 45 businesses and towns across the wine region.

The shuttle service will operate daily from Thursday, April 10 to Sunday, April 13, beyond Barossa match days.

The services, free for AFL Gather Round ticket holders, will operate from 9:45am each day, with the final loop departing at 5pm.
