The Brisbane Bullets could soon have a new base of operations after lodging a development application (DA) to transform an partly-vacant building in South Brisbane into a new performance and training centre.
Brisbane Bullets Basketball Pty Ltd applied to repurpose the 62 Merivale St building into an indoor sports complex.
The property, which previously housed a cafe, clothing store and Asian supermarket, would be repurposed rather than demolished.
Some demolition was proposed, however, as well as raising of the roof on the western side to accommodate a basketball court.
The Bullets was approached for comment.
The new ground floor would include a basketball court, three shooting bays, dribble court, gym and physio room, change room with showers, toilets, sauna and ice bathroom, players lounge, kitchen, recreation rooms, laundry, reception, an office, meeting rooms and merchandise shop.
The first floor would house open-plan workstations, head coach’s office, CEO’s office, toilets and storage.
“The development intends to make use of the existing building while making alterations to both the exterior and interior to ensure it is fit for purpose,” the DA said.
“The extent of changes, while limited, shall improve how the building currently addresses both street frontages and the nature of the proposed use shall establish a greater level of interest and activation.”
The development would see repairs to the deck bedside carpark and installation of new an entrance and awnings, signage and decorative screening to Merivale St.
There would be no changes to the existing carparking and access arrangements.
“The site includes a single crossover to Russell St, accessing a single roller door and two crossovers to Merivale St for established car park access,” the DA said.
The Bullets announced the move to Nissan Arena before the 2019/20 season. It is also home to Netball Queensland and the Firebirds.
They have been training there since then and have used it as their headquarters, sharing the limited space with the Firebirds.
Over the past two seasons the team had regular sellouts and tickets have become harder to find as the NBL grew more popular.
