Revamped Doug Jennings Park unveiled after huge upgrade to Gold Coast's The Spit

A multimillion-dollar makeover of the Gold Coast's northern Spit has delivered a stunning new waterfront destination just in time for summer.

A $5.75m upgrade of the northern Spit parklands has been completed.

The finishing touches have been put on the revamp of Doug Jennings Park and its new Seaway Green, a “scenic open space with gentle mounding and expansive views across the Seaway and Broadwater”.

Gold Coast Waterways Authority chief executive Chris Derksema said the improved parklands would be even better used coming into summer.

“This is more than an upgrade. It’s about creating places that bring people together and celebrate our connection to the water,” he said.

“Doug Jennings Park and the new Seaway Green showcase what’s possible when great design meets a strong commitment to preserving our natural assets.

“The result is a vibrant, open space that celebrates the best of coastal living.”

The project, which was funded by the state government, included the creation of the green, new pedestrian paths and improved landscaping, as well as an event space for concerts and other major events, as well as extra seating.

New picnic facilities were also built.

Deputy Premier Jarrod Bleijie said the improved Spit would be a boost for the city.

“This project shows what can be achieved when we stay true to the vision of The Spit Master Plan - protecting open space, improving access to the waterfront and delivering places people love,” he said.

“It’s been delivered on time, on budget and shaped by what the community said they wanted.

“That’s how we make sure The Spit remains a destination that’s natural, welcoming and uniquely Queensland.”

Surfers Paradise MP John-Paul Langbroek welcomed the completion of works.

“People wanted to see this space protected, improved and still feel like The Spit and that’s exactly what they’re getting,” he said.

“It’s been delivered in a way that respects the character of the area and gives locals something they can be proud of for years to come.”
