A Queensland man stuttered for 10 seconds in court after being asked why he was there, requiring the magistrate to reveal the details of the charge.

“Why are you here sir? … What is the charge?” Magistrate Damian Dwyer asked Tyson Jack Merrin as he fronted Mackay Magistrates Court on Tuesday.

The 29 year old responded only with stutters before Mr Dwyer dialled in Mr Merrin’s lawyer to read aloud the charge.

Mr Dwyer said Mr Merrin was charged with knowingly possessing “namely computer generated” child exploitation material on June 1 in Bakers Creek.

Mr Merrin did not enter a plea before the court.

Mr Dwyer ordered a brief of evidence be made available to Mr Merrin’s lawyer by August 30 and adjourned the matter to October 2.

Mr Merrin does not have to appear in person on that date.
