A Mid-North Coast man, ordered to stay away from kids after being convicted of child sex abuse has been uncovered associating with junior soccer players.

An off-duty police officer noticed Tyrone Evans placing his hands on the shoulders of a local junior soccer player and talking to him on November 16 last year, sparking investigations, court documents reveal.

The player was within the Miniroos division for players between four and seven.

As police probed the situation they found Evans, who lives in Bulahdelah, had regularly been attending games. During a presentation day in September, he played a match with children.

As part of the 30-year-old’s obligations of being on the child protection register, Evans must not have an affiliation with any clubs or organisations with child membership or participation.

Evans was placed on the register after being convicted of having sexual intercourse with a child older than 14 and younger than 16 in Dubbo Local Court on August 31, 2017.

Evans fronted Magistrate Allison Hawkins in the Forster Local Court on Thursday to be sentenced after pleading guilty to failing to comply with reporting obligations.

Asked about his involvement with the junior club, Evans denied touching the child and said he was offering sporting advice and not playing for the club or coaching.

He misunderstood the obligations of being on the register, his lawyer told the court.

However, a police prosecutor pointed out Evans had been on the register for seven years and been reminded of his responsibilities on several occasions.

It was heard Evans injured his foot and was unable to work, causing him to feel depressed and relapse into drug use.

“Your record is starting to build again,” Ms Hawkins warned.

Evans was sentenced to a 12-month community correction order and directed to perform 50 hours of community service work.
