A man who molested a child when she turned up at his house after an argument with family was labelled a “kid f***er” and later violently attacked and hospitalised, a court has heard.

Troy David Bills, 54, pleaded guilty in Maryborough District Court to one count of indecent treatment of a child under 12 years.

The girl heard the girl had run away from home on the day of the offending, visiting the man’s house.

While the child was there, Bills put his hand down the back of the girl’s pants and underwear, touching her bottom and making “a weird noise” the court heard.

It also heard Bills didn’t remember the incident, but accepted it happened and was “extraordinarily embarrassed” to have done what he did.

Bills had served four days in custody.

He had also been the victim of alleged reprisal in the wake of the incident when a woman and man turned up at his residence, with the man calling him a “kid f***er”, and telling Bills he was “going to kill him”, the court heard.

The prosecution argued there was no evidence connecting his offending to that incident.

However, defence barrister Ed Whitten said Bills had needed to leave his accommodation after the incident because of aggression from those around him.

The nature of the allegation had spread, causing Bills anxiety, Mr Whitten said.

He also said Bills believed a recent physical attack that had been carried out on him was a result of knowledge of his offending in the community.

“To his mind at least it is a reasonable conclusion this attack was related to this offence,” Mr Whitten said.

Bills had needed surgery in the wake of the assault, stitches to his arm and he suffered extensive bruising.

He had been in hospital for three to four days in the wake of the attack, the court heard and while Bills reported the attack to police, no one had been charged.

Judge Terry Gardiner said on the day in question, the mother and her child had an argument and the child ended up at Bills’ house.

The girl was talking to him when he put his hand down her pants, he said.

She later told her mother about the offending, Mr Gardiner said.

“You were clearly a trusted adult,” he said.

The court heard Bills had no formal education and was receiving the disability support pension.

He also suffered from anxiety and depression and had no relevant criminal history.

Mr Gardiner sentenced Bills to nine months in prison, wholly suspended for two years.
