A critical investigation has been launched after a young man was found dead on a walking track just hours after another was dropped at hospital with severe head injuries in the state’s north.
Emergency services were called to Fischer St in Goonellabah, a suburb of Lismore, about 6.20am on Friday after the body of 25-year-old Ramone Gordon was discovered on a busy walking track.
It came only hours after a 31-year-old man was taken to Lismore Base Hospital by a group of unidentified people about 2.50am suffering serious head injuries.
He was later airlifted to Gold Coast University Hospital, where he remains in a serious condition.
Police believe the two incidents are connected and stem from a violent brawl involving up to 20 people at Clifford Park in Goonellabah, about 500 metres from where Gordon’s body was discovered earlier that morning.
Strike Force Pineshaw has been established by Richmond Police District, assisted by the State Crime Command’s Homicide Squad to investigate the incident and death.
Friends and family of Ramone Gordon have since flooded social media with tributes, describing him as “an innocent life taken” and demanding answers.
“Where’s the justice for this grieving family?” one wrote.
“Another young innocent life. Another case to solve,” said another.
“Fly high, spread your wings my boy, see you on the other side,” another posted.
A separate critical incident investigation will review the response of police to the events of that morning.
The internal probe, overseen by the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission, is being carried out by officers from the Mid North Coast Police District.
Anyone with information surrounding the incident is being urged to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
