Currumbin RSL: Stunning $4m transformation of popular Gold Coast venue

REVEALED:  A moody luxury sports and cocktail bar has been revealed as the final piece in a multimillion-dollar club makeover on the Gold Coast.

A MOODY sports and cocktail bar has been revealed as the final piece in a multimillion-dollar club makeover on the Gold Coast.

Currumbin RSL is close to completing the $4 million restaurant and members area refurbishment, with plans to open its new destination bar by mid-December.

Designed by Cayas Architects, director Jeremy Ward described the project as a relaxed resort-style design compared to a more traditional club environment.

The first stage opened in January this year comes complete with a light and beachy accents, which will contrast with the new cocktail area.

Mr Ward said the new area would juxtapose the light and bright environment on the water frontage of the space, with the use of darker timbers, earthy stone and limited directional lighting combining to create an ambience and space more reflective of a late night spirit bar.

“It is the end of the bottom floor renovation and will be a bit of a separate space from the club environment,” said club marketing manager Marc Thompson.

While the renovations had already been planned before the pandemic hit, Mr Thompson said he believes the new face of the club will draw customers back in.

“The area has been completely boarded up for some time so it will be a nice sunrise to people who haven’t been here for some time,” he said.

“It will add to the variety of the space and showcase how versatile we can be as a venue.”

EARLIER THIS YEAR:

THE first 'course' of the Currumbin RSL redevelopment has been served up to the public with the opening of the new-look dining area.

As part of a massive $4 million renovation, the club is transforming before members and patrons' eyes to meet the changing nature of the southern Gold Coast area.

Stage one of the redevelopment has involved the dining area with the repositioning of the kitchen and resizing of the function room.

Marketing and Communications Executive Manager Marc Thompson said the dining area allowed for patrons to enjoy more of the creek frontage and with bi-fold doors, this allowed the area to be opened up to allow for the outdoors to come inside.

"We have changed the flooring as well to have a more relaxed informal feel which is in keeping with our goal of casual dining," Mr Thompson said.

"We will still maintain table service for our evening dining and the change has allowed us to introduce a new menu as well.

"The next stage of the project involves the bar area which will open up the space with a large single bar servicing both the indoor and outdoor areas.

"The stone flooring with continue and we will have the same ability to open up to the deck which will really create a very relaxed casual atmosphere while being able to close it in should we need to due to weather."

Mr Thompson said the club had recognised the changing demographics in and around Currumbin and Palm Beach and it was important to be able to meet the demand, especially in dining.

The bar renovations are expected to be completed prior to Anzac Day which is traditionally one of the busiest days of the year for the club.
