Two women are dead and another seriously injured after a car left the road and smashed into two cars parked at a popular riverside swimming spot on the Mid-North Coast.
While a 79-year old woman died at the scene on Thursday, a second woman aged 78 died on Friday.
Superintendent Joanne Schultz of Coffs/Clarence Command District said the women were locals and all known to each other.
“It was a tragic incident, a terrible scene and the occupants of the vehicles are all local people,” she said.
The incident occurred about 4.20pm on Thursday, with emergency services responding to reports of a vehicle leaving the roadway and crashing into two parked and unattended cars in a carpark off Hammond St, Bellingen.
The road leads onto Lavenders Bridge and the riverside area is a popular swimming and meeting point.
Bystanders reported the car became airborne before crashing into the two parked cars.
Bystanders and attending officers from Coffs Clarence Police District performed CPR on the two female passengers – until paramedics arrived.
Both the female driver, aged in her 60s, and the 89-year old passenger were treated at the scene by paramedics before being taken to Coffs Harbour Hospital.
The older woman is in a critical condition and the driver is in a serious but stable condition.
A crime scene has been established pending the arrival of officers from the Crash Investigation Unit.
Anyone with information about the crash – or who has any available dashcam/mobile phone footage – is urged to contact Coffs Harbour Police Station or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
