Grafton First Nations artist Kim Healey is ecstatic after her major work ‘Ngurra Jagun’ or ‘Home Country’ has taken pride of place in the Fountain Court public foyer of NSW parliament.

Ms Healey attended an unveiling of the commissioned piece by President of the Legislative Council, Ben Franklin, on Wednesday.

The prestigious event was part of the NSW parliament's Bicentenary celebrations.

The artwork celebrates and pays respect to both the saltwater and freshwater of Ms Healey’s Gumbaynggirr and Bundjalung heritage.

“Ngurra Jagun is a correlation between the Southern Cross and how our culture is our compass,” Ms Healey said.

“The inner design with traditional overlaid patterns and symbols, acknowledges community world views, meeting places and unity,” she said.

Member for Clarence Richie Williams expressed how proud he was of the local artist after viewing the piece in Ms Healey’s Grafton gallery.

“I encourage everyone to visit the NSW parliament and experience the beauty and depth of Kim’s work, which stands as a symbol of the strong relationship between the parliament and the Aboriginal community,” he said.

At the ceremony, Mr Franklin praised the artwork’s significance.

“This artwork not only commemorates our past, it also invites contemplation of the kind of future we aim to build together, and our ongoing commitment to reconciliation with the diverse Aboriginal communities of our state,“ he said.

The commissioning of Ngurra Jagun is part of the NSW parliament's engagement with the state’s First Nations communities and will stand as a lasting legacy of the Bicentenary celebrations.
