Cayla George’s leadership role for the Meteorettes more important than on-court dominance

She’s averaging 21 points and 18.4 rebounds a game, but her dominance on-court isn’t her greatest strength.

Another dominant display for the Meteorettes was added to an impressive season for Olympian Cayla George on Friday night.

In a match where the defence was lacking on both sides, George provided the Meteorettes a strong presence in and outside the paint throughout the match.

The star forward scored 23 points, pulled down 23 rebounds and dished five assists in Mackay’s 82-58 point win over Gold Coast.

Meteorettes coach Scott McKenzie said he was lucky to have a player of George’s calibre on the roster.

“She is not only a fantastic basketball talent, but it’s great to have her playing alongside the kids we have,” he said.

“She’s positive and congratulates you when do you the right thing, but she will also hold you accountable on the flip side, and that’s gold as a learning experience.”

George will still suit up for the Meteorettes for the next six games, before travelling to Tokyo to play for the Opals.

McKenzie said the extended absence of George didn’t change the side’s expectations on the season.

“When you sign someone like Cayla, there are internal and external expectations on the side,” he said.

“We have a pretty tough stretch while she’s away unfortunately, but we still need to take care of business so she can come back for finals.”

Guard Courtney Virgo played her first game at home since returning from her stint in America, and McKenzie said she had been a fantastic inclusion.

“She gave us a real spark coming off the bench, and I’m really proud we are able to bring quality local talent back to town,” he said.

“She’s definitely improved her game from her time in the college system, and I’ve always known she’s a legitimate three-point shooter, so if she can do that every night that’ll help us out.”

The Meteorettes will face South West Metro Pirates at home next week.
