Benjamin Gregory Vignes in Coffs court pleading guilty to speeding, high-range drink driving

A Coffs Harbour man blew more than three times the legal alcohol limit after catching the attention of police as he rocketed along the Pacific Motorway at more than 200kmh.

Benjamin Gregory Vignes, 32, of Toormina faced Coffs Harbour Local Court on Wednesday.

He pleaded guilty to dangerous or reckless speeding and high-range drink driving.

Officers were checking speeds on the southbound lanes of the highway at Corindi Beach about 5.30pm on March 30 when they heard a “loud roar”, court documents state.

The officers watched as a small silver sedan tore past another vehicle - a speed gun indicating the vehicle was travelling at 203kmh.

Police pointed at the Holden Astra and Vignes looked at the officers but he did not slow down and a pursuit began.

Officers caught up with the car and Vignes pulled over near the Arrawarra rest area.

“Police observed the male driver to attempt to drink from a container and told him to stop,” police facts state.

Vignes handed over a Queensland driver’s licence and officers could smell booze on his breath, though he told them he had not consumed any alcohol that day.

But his eyes were “bloodshot and teary” - and a roadside breath test was positive.

Vignes was arrested and taken to Woolgoolga Police Station, where a breath analysis revealed a reading of 0.152.

He told officers he drank 10 bottles of Coopers beer and ate a pasta dish between 6.30pm and midnight.in Queensland the day before he was pulled over in northern NSW.

Quizzed about why he had been speeding, Vignes said “it was stupid and dumb”.

“I was just trying to get home,” he said.

Vignes’ licence was suspended, but the Holden was not seized because it belonged to his mum.

Magistrate Theresa Hamilton adjourned the case o July 19 and ordered the preparation of a sentencing assessment report.
