Woman killed after Bruce Hwy crash, west of Mackay

A woman has died and two children have been injured after their car crashed on the Bruce Highway and came to a stop on a railway line.

A woman has died and two children have been injured after their car crashed on the Bruce Highway and came to a stop on a railway line.

Emergency services were called to the crash at the intersection of the Bruce Hwy and Donohues Rd, Farleigh, about 11km west of Mackay at around 6.50pm on Tuesday.

Police said the black Toyota Kluger was travelling along the highway when it lost control before coming to a stop on railway tracks nearby.

Queensland Ambulance Service said an elderly female was assessed to be in a life-threatening condition and rushed to hospital.

Two primary-school aged girls were taken in stable conditions to Mackay Base Hospital with minor chest injuries.

The 73-year-old Mackay woman later died in hospital.

Queensland Fire Department said three fire and rescue crews responded after the initial report the car came off the highway near a bridge.

Firefighters managed to remove a person who was trapped at 7.15pm and handed them over to paramedics.

Queensland Rail said the car was on the rail tracks with its staff sent to assess the situation.

According to a Queensland Rail spokeswoman, two freight trains were delayed as a result of the crash.

As of 10.50pm on Tuesday, the crash site had been cleared and trains were able to move through again.

No passenger rail services were impacted.

The Bruce Hwy was blocked from the crash site to near Glendaragh Rd, Farleigh.

The Forensic Crash Unit is investigating

Anyone who witnessed the crash or may have dashcam vision is urged to contact police.
