An international student rushed to hospital after being plucked from the Southport Broadwater on the Gold Coast has tragically died.

The 25-year-old failed to surface after jumping off a jetty into the Broadwater while swimming with friends on Thursday.

A lifeguard from the nearby Gold Coast Aquatic Centre rescued her and commenced CPR until paramedics arrived.

The woman from Asia was taken by ambulance to Gold Coast University Hospital in a critical condition.

Paramedics used an automated chest compression device in a frantic attempt to revive her but she was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Queensland Ambulance Service supervisor David Morgan said the woman was believed to have been in the water for up to 10 minutes.

Mr Morgan said her friends were “quite traumatised” at the scene.

“They’ve obviously watched their friend undergo a resuscitation attempt and they’re quite distraught and upset over the events,” he said.
