Daycares are no longer just for human children, with doggy day cares springing up around the southeast more than ever before in the past decade.

Some centres, particularly in more urban inner-city areas, offer indoor daycare sessions, while others with more space also include some outdoor sections or are completely outside.

Some doggy day cares have a pool, sandpit and other play equipment, some cater only to small dogs, while other versions of daycare comprise walks or trips to the beach.

All doggy daycares aim to provide physical and mental stimulation for the pooches.

Most centres also offer other services, including but not limited to grooming or training with qualified staff members.

Mad Dogs and Englishmen Gold Coast North franchise owner, Natalia Frizzo, takes canine clients for regular outings to the beach and local parks.

She said daycare was beneficial for dogs for many reasons, including helping improve their confidence.

“This is the best benefit we offer in our walks. We work on their confidence … after a few (group) walks they’re not afraid any more of people or dogs,” she said.

“We also work on their recall and try to stimulate them with different ways of playing as we want them to come home tired and happy.”

Mad Dogs and Englishmen employees and trainers limit themselves to four dogs each and often take them to a beach, park or other dog-friendly areas.

Miss Frizzo, 36, of Broadbeach Waters, who worked with Mad Dogs in Sydney for several years before buying her franchise about two years ago, said owners sent their pets to doggy daycare for different reasons, which often varied depending on the geographic area.

“In Sydney (clients) had their corporate jobs and did not have time for their dogs during the day,” she said.

“They needed someone to go to their places, pick their dogs up to take them out for a wee and go to the park for a bit of a run, but on the Gold Coast, the demographic is different. “They have massive houses and backyards and do include their dogs in their active lifestyle.”

Miss Frizzo said many of her Gold Coast clients even walk their dogs before she picks them up.

“They still hire us as they really want their dogs to go out and live an active life and to be socialised,” she said.

“They love that we can take them on group walks and sometimes meet up with the others at different parks, not the usual parks they take them, or if their dogs don’t have a good recall we work on the recall.”

Unleashed GC owner Eric Mazzei, 36, of Palm Beach, agrees there is more to doggy daycare than just wearing dogs out, with the service also benefiting owners and the broader community.

“We’re helping the families and dogs to know how to be a social animal and to create the best for life for themselves,” he said.

“It’s not only about getting your dog tired … It’s a way to enhance the wellbeing of the dog.

“It’s also very important to the community for dogs to be social and friendly and to teach them how to navigate the world.”

Mr Mazzei, a dog trainer, offers group sessions for up to 10 dogs, all of which he picks up, before taking them on outings to secure, dog friendly areas around the Gold Coast.

“It’s like a big school for them,” he said.
