Two teachers at an elite private Catholic school on the Gold Coast have been stood down and an urgent investigation launched after they were busted by students in an allegedly compromising position in a classroom.

The respected male and female teachers have been suspended from their roles at Aquinas College at Southport after the incident on Tuesday.

The scandal has rocked the school community, with reports spreading like wildfire through the student body.

Parents said there had been no communication from the school about the alleged incident, and they had to be told about it by their children.

“Everyone is talking about it,” one parent told The Courier-Mail.

“What has (allegedly) happened is shocking enough, let alone at a Catholic school. It’s disgustingly ironic. These people are meant to be our children’s role models.

“Parents want to know what action the school is taking against these two individuals.”

The school in Ashmore is the oldest coeducational catholic college on the Gold Coast with Palaszczuk Government Minister Meaghan Scanlon, former Miss Universe Australia Jesinta Campbell and international conman Peter Foster among recognisable former students.

Aquinas principal Marcus Richardson wrote to parents on Thursday afternoon, after The Courier-Mail sought comment, to “inform you of a matter that has been brought to the school’s attention about the behaviour of two staff members while on school grounds”.

“This matter is being treated seriously and an investigation is currently underway,” he said.

“Please know that we cannot make any public comment on this matter while the investigation is carried out.

“The priority of the college remains the safety and wellbeing of students and staff members. If you have any concerns about this matter, please contact me.”

In a statement, Brisbane Catholic Education said that “an allegation has been made about the behaviour of two staff members while on school grounds”.

“This matter is currently being investigated by Brisbane Catholic Education,” a spokesman said.

Aquinas College is a coeducational Catholic high school with about 1200 students from Years 7 to 12, with parents paying fees of up to $5700 a year.

Its alumni include Ms Scanlon, Housing Minister and Queensland’s youngest-ever female state MP who graduated from the college in 2010, as well as Campbell, Foster and sports stars including Olympic shooter Annemarie Forder and former Maroon Bob Lindner.

Foster was reportedly asked to leave the-then all-boys Aquinas for selling dodgy watches to schoolmates, but told a 30-year school reunion in 2009 that he was “never at school”.“I was either at the racetrack or TAB,” he said.
