A man has died after his ute hit a tree and rolled “several times” on the Gold Coast overnight.
Emergency services were called to the flipped Mazda utility on Gooding Drive in Merrimac about 9.20pm Sunday.
Initial police inquiries suggest the ute was travelling northbound on Boowaggan Road when it veered from the road and collided with a tree, near the intersection of Gooding Drive.
“As a result of the impact the ute rolled several times,” Queensland Police said in a statement.
The 55-year-old driver, a Logan Reserve man, died at the scene.
A Queensland Police officer at the scene said witnesses saw the man bogged, before he accelerated and hit the tree.
“A member of the public has gone to his aid, he’s then accelerated and then crashed into a tree,” she said.
“The actual cause of the crash is still under investigation.”
Forensic Crash Unit investigations continue.
