Olympic swimming champion Cam McEvoy and his wife Madeline have welcomed a baby boy, after an unexpectedly “wild” entrance into the world.
Posting on Instagram on Monday night, Mr McEvoy shared the arrival with his fans, saying they had named their son Hartley James McEvoy as an “ode to strength of the heart”.
“We walked into the hospital at 4pm, not knowing we were just hours away from meeting our son,” he wrote.
“Maddi was so calm that everyone in the room was shocked when they found out she was 8cm dilated.”
Mr McEvoy said they had “had a well-thought out birthing plan” due to his wife’s struggles with a heart condition, making baby Hartley’s name all the more symbolic.
Mrs McEvoy was born with a pulmonary valve defect and has undergone four open-heart surgeries and received a replacement pulmonary valve at just 17.
“But Hartley seemed to have different plans. Before we knew it, he was earthside in our hands before 7pm.”
“It was fast, wild, calm, and beautiful all at the same time. A blur and yet the clearest moments of our lives.”
He said that both Hartley and his wife were doing “exceptionally” well.
