What you said about Robbie Katter, One Nation proposing to change abortion laws after Qld election

Queensland’s state election may be weeks away but it seems many have already had enough of the politics.

News that conservative crossbench MPs will propose changes to the state’s abortion laws in the next term of parliament, in a direct challenge to David Crisafulli’s authority over the LNP, has been met with outrage from many.

The Opposition Leader, campaigning in Cairns, doubled down on his promise there would be “no change” to the ability of women to access abortions in Queensland should the LNP take government.

But he cannot control what laws crossbenchers put forward nor how his MPs vote unless he chooses to break with convention and deny his party room a conscience vote on matters of life or death.

Mr Crisafulli refused to say if he would deny MPs a conscience vote or how he could guarantee there would be no changes to termination of pregnancy laws despite being asked no less than 15 questions on abortion or his stance on the LNP’s voting convention on matters of life or death.

It can be revealed the Katter’s Australian Party and One Nation have vowed to introduce laws to repeal or amend abortion laws, with the KAP going as far as to call out LNP MPs to throw their support behind changes to termination of pregnancy laws before the election.

“They can be assured that there will be a repeal bill to vote on in the next parliament put forward by the KAP,” KAP leader Robbie Katter said.

“We’d be seeking their support before the election to give voters a say on this issue.”

Confirmation the KAP and One Nation will push for changes will add to growing pressure on Mr Crisafulli to outline how he plans to live up to his promise not to change abortion laws.

LNP MPs including Tony Perrett (Gympie) and Jon Krause (Scenic Rim) have in recent weeks voiced anti-abortion views in candidate forums.

Readers were quick to pile into the debate, with many claiming this political jostling was yet another needless issue for many.

Some claimed it’s time to ditch preferential voting, while others said the abortion topic needs to remain a conversation between a patient and doctor.

WHAT YOU SAID

We’re in trouble

Anne

I’ll still be voting LNP as there is no other choice that is even remotely capable of government. But I have a major concern with the LNP and that is that they have become infiltrated by the religious right wingers who really do believe in their misguided faith. They need to control these people and remember there is a separation of powers between religion and government for good reason.

The Joker 🃏

Politics for politics sake. These issues are at the bottom of the priority list Robbie, but by all means, light another candle.

Ted

Get rid of preferential voting ! Qlders want a change – we don’t more of the same which will destroy our state

IAN

Why hasn’t either the Steven Miles ALP or David Crisafulli LNP given the undertaking of building low cost basic no frills prisons. We Queenslanders need another at least 8 more of these prisons. Let’s hear who is going to build them.

Rosie

Sounds like misogynistic men, once again, dictating what rights women have over their own bodies. I’ll bet if men carried and birthed the babies, abortion legislation would have been introduced decades ago.

Minor parties, really?

Neryl

Interesting considering ON has no current politicians in QLD parliament – a toothless tiger

Allan

This just changed my mind on voting KAP – never

Paul

Katter is out of touch and not listening on this issue. Move on.

I’m left cold and broke

So the voting slip will have greens last, Labor second last and KAP third last. Hopefully KAP and the greens will face oblivion at the ballot box.

Louise

David is a great representative for LNP and I have complete confidence in his leadership for Qld. Getting QLD back on track is his first priority. Better than what we have now.

RogerJ

Get rid of preferential voting and we won’t need all this last second last nonsense.

It’s all pointless

The reality for Robbie and One Nation is that Labor is so on the nose, so out of touch, so hated by the voters of QLD that the LNP is going to win the election by such a margin that the LNP will have a very clear majority to govern in its own right. It won’t need the support of any other parties or independents. The LNP will have a clear majority. Robbie can be critical and unhappy about things, but it won’t be a factor when your sitting on the other side of the chamber with a minority of Labor folks.

Realistic

Katter is way out of order here. I am a Christian as well but support the current abortion laws. It's the woman’s right to decide, nobody elses business.

Katters & O.N. business should be getting rid of Liebor, bit hard to believe given they supported Liebor for years.

Don't trust them.

Steve

After nine long years of destructive Labor the Katters instead of threatening more of the same hardship and heartache they would be far better off at least offering up constructive negotiations and support for a new government with policies to repair this once great state

Blimey Charlie.

Old boys brigade trying to force their opinions on the majority, I would be interested in a poll from the female side on this proposal, as my wife said it’s a discussion & decision between the doctor & patient it’s no one else’s business.
