Opposition Leader David Crisafulli has vowed to make “immediate” changes that could unlock 10,000 new homes if elected this month.
“We’ve put forward a plan that by 2044 we will add a million additional homes, including 53 and a half thousand new social community houses,’’ he said.
“One of the great strengths we have is a partnership with the faith-based sector which will deliver up to 10,000 new dwellings.
Mr Crisafulli described his plan to address the housing crisis after a Courier-Mail reader’s question was put to both leaders.
Carol from Mitchelton asked: “How will you address the homelessness situation?”
“They are ready to go on land that just needs a very, very small regulation change,” Mr Crisafulli said of the homes.
“And they’ll get that. They’ll get that immediately.’’
Responding to the same question, Premier Steven Miles said his government’s plan included more than $3bn to deliver new homes.
“We don’t want to see any Queenslanders sleeping rough and that’s why we increased funding to homelessness services by 20 per cent and have also expanded crisis response services, so that we have people out every single night in the parks right across Queensland offering emergency accommodation,’’ he said.
He said his government was also encouraging the private market, including those saving for a deposit to buy a home.
