THE LNP is mourning the likely loss of five frontbenchers after a disappointing showing in the southeast dismissed talented and veteran MPs.
The party was shocked to lose two of its heavyweights.
Shadow treasury spokesman and former Newman government minister Scott Emerson topped the primary count in the seat of Maiwar but will lose to either Labor or the Greens on preferences.
Ian Walker, also a Newman government minister as well as shadow attorney-general, has fallen to Labor’s Corrine McMillan in Mansfield.
Both men conceded at small parties on Saturday night. A despondent Mr Emerson blamed the reintroduction of compulsory preferential voting for making things difficult for him.
Frontbenchers Tarnya Smith has lost a redistributed Mount Ommaney, Tracy Davis is tracking to lose Aspley to Labor and Andrew Cripps is fighting off Katter’s Australian Party to keep Hinchinbrook in north Queensland.
Meanwhile, former Labor members who ran as independents, Rob Pyne and “Slick” Rick Williams, have been booted from Cairns and Pumicestone.
Both were woefully short of a win, securing a primary vote of 19 per cent and less than five per cent respectively.
