An elite Brisbane school has expressed “deep sadness” at the loss of one of its community members as friends pay respects.

An elite Brisbane school has responded to the shock death of a former student at a house party, with neighbours revealing the “horrible” scene that followed.

Greg Josephson, 58, was found unresponsive in a home in the exclusive Brisbane suburb of Clayfield on Thursday night after an alleged stabbing at a house party.

A 15-year-old boy who he knew has been charged with his murder after the party, which had up to 30 teenagers in attendance.

Police arrested the boy in a street nearby after he called triple-0.

Mr Josephson founded the Universal Store business with his brother Michael in 1999 and later sold the business to private equity investors in a reported deal worth $100m.

It was also revealed he attended St Joseph’s College, Gregory Terrace where he was a talented rugby player.

St Joseph’s Terrace principal Dr Michael Carroll sent a message to families on Friday.

“It is with deep sadness that we inform you of the death of a member of our St Joseph’s College, Gregory Terrace community,” the message said.

“You may have seen media coverage this morning relating to the death of a man in Clayfield last night.

“Out of respect for his family, we cannot provide further details at this stage.

“We express our sincere condolences to the man’s family.

“This is a tragic incident that will impact members of our College community.

“The man’s death is currently the subject of a police investigation. Therefore, we will ensure that any commentary that we make as a College does not impact the investigation.”

Shocked friends described Mr Josephson as “a gentle soul”.

A neighbour said they had several party goers leaning over their fence trying to flee the party.

“We had two girls leaning over the fence going saying we got invited to this party, and ‘we just want to leave, and we can’t go’,” she said.

“They were just like ‘we want to go home, and we’re not allowed to leave’.

“They were devastated.”

The neighbour said they didn’t realise anything was going on, until police arrived in the street.

“It was extremely quiet, I wouldn’t have even known there was a party going on last night,” she said.

“I didn’t even think there was anybody home – that house was totally silent last night.

“I then saw the police and where there is that many police and they’ve got the road blocked off, you know something huge is going down.”

The neighbour said she was devastated after finding out what had occurred.

“It’s just devastating to find out, what happened to the family living next door to you,” she said.

“It just floors you that something like that can be going on right next door and you have no idea.

“It’s horrible.”
