Sippy Downs residents frustrated over Sunshine Coast hooning activity

Footage of hooning vehicles and dangerous manoeuvres in a usually peaceful suburb has prompted an outpouring from fed up residents.

WATCH: Hoons caught on camera at Sippy Downs

Footage showing a massive cloud of smoke kicked up in a residential street of a peaceful Sunshine Coast suburb was shared on a social media community page.

The video, posted by Asha Chalmers on the Sippy Downs Community – Connect page, shows a car making a dangerous manoeuvre at the intersection of High St and Sippy Downs Dr in Sippy Downs.

Smoke can be seen billowing across the intersection as the car sharply turns into the Bruce Highway-bound lane and drives away.

In the footage, it appears a person is leaning out the passenger window and filming on their phone with flash on.

The caption on the video questions if other residents are “sick and tired” of High St being the “idiot capital” of Sippy Downs.

Ms Chalmers said the hooning seen in the video woke her up about 11.40pm on April 17, and she described it as “not an irregular occurrence”.

She noted the unnecessary revving as well as screaming neighbours and the smell of cannabis and cigarettes wafting into other apartments is “never-ending”.

“It’s such a shame a nice area with good people is tainted by the disappointing behaviours of people with no concept of respect or consequence,” the post concluded.

Ms Chalmers said while she had not witnessed any crashes, she had seen cars drag each other by the traffic lights as well as a revving motorcycle taking laps around the block.

She had also heard drivers speeding off or through the traffic lights.

Ms Chalmers said she was often woken up at 4am by the revving, particularly from the motorcycle.

“The revving and unsafe driving occurs at least once per day,” she said.

“It’s only a matter of time someone is killed.

“This is all happening at the lights outside Siena Catholic College and the High Street area is full of families with children.”

Ms Chalmers called for a speed camera to be stationed at the lights as soon as possible and, in the long run, for children in school to receive driver’s education.

“The people in my video were burning out that so much that the street was filled with smoke,” she said.

“What if a pedestrian was coming home from work or a student walking home from studying? It was only 11.30pm.”

Other members of the community board chimed in on the frequent hooning heard around the neighbourhoods of Sippy Downs.

Peta Rudderham commented she also heard the hooning that night, claiming it to be a “nuisance” to everyone.

Jaden William spoke of a car driving past their home “everyday like clockwork”.

“It’s so loud you can’t even hear yourself think,” they wrote in the comments.

“We tried reporting to the police but they couldn’t do anything about it.”

Susan Carby commented the “dreadful” hooning occurs nearly every night.

“All this is happening while there is a major crash a couple of kilometres away on the Bruce Highway,” she wrote.

A Queensland Police Service spokeswoman said police were investigating following reports of the hooning incident.

It has been reported a dark-coloured sedan was seen driving dangerously at the intersection before leaving the scene.

Anyone with information regarding the incident has been urged to contact police and quote QP2500672961.
