Queensland’s Covid-19 cases have continued to climb by the thousand as the State Government scraps the requirement for PCR tests for arriving travellers from hot spots.

A daily record was set for the state’s case numbers on Wednesday with 1589 recorded overnight and 6,368 active in Queensland.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk tweeted that Queensland would now accept rapid antigen tests for travellers.

“From January 1, travellers into Qld from interstate hot spots can use a negative Rapid Antigen Test to satisfy border pass requirements,” she said.

“A PCR test will no longer be required.

Of the cases, 4,918 were classed as interstate, other or awaiting assignment while the Gold Coast had 336.

There were 221 active cases in Brisbane’s Metro North and 61 in Metro South, while Sunshine Coast had 236.

Cairns (71), Central Queensland (49), Central West (1), Childrens Health Queensland (99) and Darling Downs (77) also had cases.

Across the state Townsville had 72 cases, Mackay 5, West Moreton 81 and Wide Bay had 151.

There were 5,142 people in quarantine as a result of the virus in Queensland, with 2,402 of those in Brisbane’s Metro North.

Metro South had 1,107 people in isolation and 670 on the Gold Coast.

Townsville (119), Cairns (245), West Moreton (104), Central Queensland (47), Darling Downs (94), Mackay (35), Sunshine Coast (265) and Wide Bay (52) also had active quarantine notices.
