Endless pandemic? The worldwide struggle with vaccine effectiveness

Active cases of Covid-19 in Queensland have reached 3621 after 784 new cases were announced today.

Chief Health Officer John Gerrard said it was the right decision to open the border despite the influx of cases.

“It was the right thing to do, to allow families to reunite for Christmas,” he said.

“We couldn’t have predicted Omicron, no one did.”

With 2640 of those cases interstate, other or awaiting assignment, the majority of active cases (248) were located on the Gold Coast, followed by Metro North in Brisbane (189).

Cairns had 55 active cases, 22 in Central Queensland, one in Central West and 36 at Children's Health Queensland.

Darling Downs (33), Metro South (74), South West (1), Sunshine Coast (136), Townsville (43), West Moreton (43) and Wide Bay (92) all had cases.

There were 5084 people in quarantine as a result of positive cases in Queensland, with most of them in Metro North.

Brisbane’s Metro North region had 2317 people in quarantine while Metro South had 1125.

Quarantine notices were active across the region, including on the Gold Coast (626), Sunshine Coast (266) and Cairns (213).
