Queensland COVID-19 fines surpass $2.5 million
Dozens of Queenslanders are still being fined for breaching COVID-19 health directions every day, as police continue to conduct compliance checks and turn away people at the border.

DOZENS of Queenslanders were fined for breaching COVID-19 restrictions yesterday, as the total of infringement notices issued in the past seven weeks surpasses $2.5 million.
There were 28 infringement notices issued by Queensland police on Saturday (ending 12:01am, May 10), totalling 1880 infringement notices since the fines were brought into effect on March 27.

During the strictest phase of restrictions, police issued upwards of 100 fines each day to Queenslanders, including a Brisbane businessman who was fined twice after police allegedly caught him picnicking on a beach on Moreton Island. Over the Easter weekend, 496 people were issued with fines.
From today, up to five members from one household are allowed to visit another home.
The 50km travel limit remains in place for recreational activities such as outdoor picnics and shopping.
Police continue to take enforcement action against anyone who is failing to comply with public health directions.
Officers can issue on-the-spot fines of $1334 for individuals and $6,672 for corporations breaching restrictions.
“An integral part of the QPS response is to ensure compliance with directions particularly around self-isolation, state borders, non-essential business activity, home confinement, movement and gathering,” a Queensland police statement said.
Officers yesterday conducted 14 compliance checks on people in mandatory quarantine and 44 checks on non-essential businesses.
Police refused entry into Queensland to 27 vehicles at road borders and one passenger who arrived on a domestic flight.
From those who were allowed to enter the state, 86 people arriving by vehicles and two by aeroplane were directed into quarantine for 14 days.
Police have checked more than 159,796 at state borders, including almost 3000 in the past 24 hours.
