Storms and wet weather are tipped to rock South East Queensland this week, with both the Darling Downs and Central Highland region likely to be hit with storms as soon as Thursday.

The Bureau of Meteorology has forecast possible storms, with a high chance of showers for Kingaroy, Blackwater, and Taroom, and surrounding areas from Thursday morning.

The Darling Downs, while unlikely to see much rainfall, can also expect severe storms.

Both Toowoomba and Dalby could see up to 15mm of rainfall from Monday, and Stanthorpe could see 15mm from Sunday.

Bureau of Meteorology’s Daniel Hayes said a trough moving off the eastern coast would likely generate shower and storm activity through the Wide Bay, Central Highlands, and northern parts of the Darling Downs.

“We may see some of the thunderstorms being severe, with the potential for some damaging winds and the possibility of some large hail,” the meteorologist said.

“We’re not expecting particularly heavy rainfall totals. So the primary risk of any severe thunderstorms would be damaging winds.

“It should move off the coast on Friday, but there could still be some activity lingering around, more likely around the coastal areas into Friday as the trough shifts eastwards.”

Mr Hayes said a second trough was likely to develop on Thursday and travel northwards from the New South Wales coast.

“That’s expected to bring potential for severe activity in that northeastern part of New South Wales,” he said.

“That may continue a little further north along the coast into Friday so we may see some storms move in around the Gold Coast and perhaps up to Brisbane on that Friday morning.”

The Bureau tipped Brisbane would see widespread showers from Sunday and into next week.

Brisbane, Ipswich and Logan are all expected to see up to 10mm of rainfall on Monday.
