The Queensland Government is set to rake in more money from vehicle registration fees than the Victorian government in the coming year, despite the Sunshine State having fewer people and fewer cars.

Analysis of Budget papers has revealed the Government is tipped to haul in $2.044 billion from motor vehicle registration fees in 2021-22 – about 5.8 per cent more than the $1.931 billion the Victorian Government has budgeted to make.

The latest motor vehicle census from the ABS shows Queensland has about 850,000 fewer motor vehicle registrations than Victoria – but these figures do not include trailers, caravans and tractors.

Transport Minister Mark Bailey has defended the state’s registration fees, insisting Queensland still collects less registration revenue per kilometre of road than Victoria and NSW.

But RACQ head of public policy Susan Furze has argued Queensland’s vehicle registration fees, excluding CTP, were among the most expensive in the country.

“While the state is recovering from the pandemic, many Queenslanders are still struggling through financial uncertainty and a freeze on rego fees would help ease that burden,” she said.

Ms Furze said it was difficult to compare registration costs across all the states and territories because there were differences in rates, bases and administration of registration for passenger vehicles.

“In Victoria vehicle registration, (excluding CTP) is a flat fee of $306.90, while the cost of Queensland registration, (excluding CTP) increases with the number of vehicle cylinders,” she said.

“In Queensland a four-cylinder car will cost $399.55 to register compared to $306.90 in Victoria.

“An eight-cylinder car will cost $813.70 to register in Queensland compared to $306.90 in Victoria.”

Mr Bailey said the 1.7 per cent increase in vehicle registration fees in Queensland this financial year was the lowest increase in a number of years and comparable to other states.

“The total cost to register a medium-sized, four-cylinder vehicle in Queensland, like a Toyota Corolla, is $751.35, including CTP,” he said.

“This is the third cheapest in Australia.

“It is less than the Northern Territory ($771.55), Western Australia ($793.75), Victoria ($834.80), New South Wales ($896.48), and the Australian Capital Territory ($937).”

Mr Bailey said Queensland also had some of the lowest compulsory third party premiums in the country.
