QUEENSLAND Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk will face NRL CEO Todd Greenberg tonight in a bid to bring the competition’s Grand Final to Brisbane.

In a two-pronged assault, Sport Minister Mick de Brenni will meet with Australian Rugby League Commission Chairman Peter Beattie in Perth on Sunday ahead of the second men’s State of Origin showdown as the campaign to bring the NRL’s showpiece event to Queensland gathers steam.

Ms Palaszczuk will be at tonight’s women’s State of Origin match in Sydney along with Mr Greenberg, and will be hoping to discuss bringing both the 2021 NRL Grand Final and next year’s women’s Origin match to Queensland.

The 2020 NRL Grand Final is set to be held at the SCG, much to the angst of footy fans and rugby league legends from both sides of the Tweed who argue the cricket stadium is no place for the sport’s biggest spectacle.

Mr Beattie has hinted that the 2021 edition could be up for grabs if there are further delays in the redevelopment of Sydney’s two major football stadiums, but that will be the only window for decades with the NSW government handed a contract for hosting rights extending until 2042.

Mr de Brenni has arranged to meet Mr Beattie in Perth and plans to deliver a compelling argument for bringing the game to Queensland.

“The message from Queensland’s Major Events Minister, Kate Jones, and I is that Queensland’s got the stadium, we’ve got the team, we’ve got the fans and now we just need the game,” he said.

It is understood Ms Palaszczuk also wants to bring the women’s Origin match to Queensland, with tonight’s game marking the second year in a row it will be held at North Sydney Oval.
