A Queensland MP has called on the Premier to appoint a Minister for Men to his cabinet to help address social issues disadvantaging the male population.
Katter's Australian Party Deputy Leader Nick Dametto requested a dedicated ministerial portfolio for men that would mirror the women’s portfolio, arguing men face “significant societal issues”.
Mr Dametto, in government documents, claimed that men were “grossly over represented in areas of disadvantage”.
“Including but not limited to incarceration rates, suicide rates, substance addiction, and homelessness,” Mr Dametto wrote.
“Will the Premier consider establishing a dedicated Ministerial portfolio for Men to help address these significant societal issues similar to what currently exists for women?”
Mr Crisafulli refused the request, explaining the areas of disadvantage outlined by Mr Dametto were already addressed in existing portfolios.
“As I am sure the member will appreciate, the cabinet was sworn into their portfolio responsibilities on 1 November 2024,” he said.
“Rather than creating a portfolio for men, our government is focused on tackling the youth crime crisis, the housing crisis, the health crisis and the cost of living crisis which have developed across the past decade.
“To this end, we have met our commitment to address these areas in our 100 day plan.”
Mr Dametto said men’s issues had low representation “across the board,” with things like domestic violence and healthcare “dropping off the radar”.
“My request comes from a genuine place,” he said.
“We had a nine-year cycle with the Labor Party fixing women’s problems across the state which need the attention they get.
“Are we going to focus on problems for everyone out there or just stick with a Minister for Women?”
