A Gold Coast cop has been charged with serious assault after allegedly using excessive force while on duty.
Police say the 56-year-old male senior constable from the South Eastern Region has been stood down and served with a notice to appear in court in relation to alleged excessive force.
Sources said it would be alleged the Rapid Action Patrol (RAP) officer was transporting an offender to the Southport watch-house when he deliberately slammed on the brakes.
The male offender was allegedly injured after being flung forward in the police vehicle.
“The member has been charged with assault occasioning bodily harm, allegedly committed while on duty,” a spokesperson said.
“The member has been stood down from the Queensland Police Service and is expected to appear in the Southport Magistrates Court on June 4, 2025.
In a statement, the QPS said this did not mean the allegations had been substantiated.
“In keeping with our commitment to high standards of behaviour, transparency and accountability, we have undertaken to inform the public when a member of the Service faces serious allegations of misconduct,” the statement said.
Assault occasioning bodily harm is the most serious assault charge and carries a maximum penalty of seven years in jail.
