Push for real time emergency department data

Live data showing how many patients are waiting for care in hospitals across the state could be made publicly available under a proposal floated by the LNP to boost healthcare services in Queensland.

Opposition Leader David Crisafulli has accused the state government of “losing control” of healthcare and has put forward several solutions he says they can work towards.

That includes providing real time data on resource availability so that patients and health professionals can make choices in real time.

The LNP leader said another solution was providing better resourcing for triaging in emergency departments to ensure the service is “fit for purpose”.

He also wants more investment in resourced beds, as he claimed the government was “fudging the figures” by counting chairs towards the hospital bed tally.

“Ambulance ramping is back in Queensland,” Mr Crisafulli said.

“The state government is losing control of healthcare meaning Queenslanders are losing access to vital services.

“We must work towards finding solutions.”

The NSW government runs a website that shows regularly updated data on how many patients in various hospitals have been assessed by a triage nurse and are awaiting treatment.

It also shows how many beds and treatment spaces are available at the hospital’s emergency department and what the “usual number” of patients arriving at the ED is during certain times of the day.

In Victoria, an online table is updated daily showing the estimated median time to treatment for “non-urgent patients” in a number of hospitals.

But the website warns the data is not intended to provide advice to patients with “severe injuries” and that people should always attend their nearest emergency department for treatment.

LNP health spokeswoman Ros Bates said: “The Opposition has been inundated with ramping horror stories from honest Queenslanders over the past week.”

“Queenslanders deserve a world class health system no matter where they live,” Ms Bates said.
