Queensland records 3,750 new COVID-19 cases

Queensland has recorded 5286 new cases and 10 deaths in the past 24 hours, Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has announced.

Chief health officer John Gerrard said of the 10 deaths, three in their 60s, three in their 70s, one in their 80s and three in their 90s, none were in aged care facilities.

He said the state of hospitalisations continued to improve. There are 16 people ventilated.

There were 1,587 school children aged from five to 17 who had Covid, up from 963 yesterday, but Dr Gerrard said almost all of the children had mild symptoms.

He said he “wouldn’t read too much” into a single day reading.

He said a seven day rolling average would provide a more comprehensive indication of cases in school-aged children.

He said all restrictions in Queensland were under review as the Omicron wave was coming to an end.

Ms Palaszczuk said daily press conferences would likely continue “at least” until the end of February.

Queensland recorded 3750 cases on Monday, while six people infected with the virus lost their lives.

The number of people in the state’s hospitals also continues to fall, with 484 in public hospitals and 30 in private facilities. A total of 40 people are in intensive care.
