TWELVE people have been charged after a wild brawl broke out during Australia Day celebrations at Moffat Beach’s Eleanor Shipley Park yesterday afternoon.
Police were called to the popular family-friendly park about 3.30pm as small fights broke out among a large group of drunk teenagers, a Queensland Police Service spokeswoman said.
“There was a large group of people drinking, with small fights breaking out in the crowd,” she said.
They were called back to the area when a massive fight broke out about 7pm.
Today they have released footage from the scene.
Multiple police crews attended and took several youths into custody last night.
Three police officers were injured - a female officer was hospitalised with a suspected broken hand; a man was kicked in the head and another officer suffered elbow injuries.
Twelve people, mostly teenagers, are now facing charges ranging from obstruct police to assault police, the QPS spokeswoman said.
Sunshine Coast District Acting Superintendent Jason Overland said police discretion around drinking in public would be reviewed in wake of the incident.
“Violence towards police is unacceptable,” he said.
“Drinking alcohol in public is illegal but a certain discretion is applied by our police when looking at celebrations like Australia Day.
“I can guarantee that discretion will be reviewed.”
