A second man charged with murder over the fatal stabbing of a young man in a Gold Coast carpark earlier this month has been named.
Will Swinbourne, 21, was stabbed to death in the carpark beneath the Gold Coast Radiology building at Hope Island on March 11 in what police allege was a drug deal gone wrong.
Kai Stacey Reinhardt, 24, who was allegedly with the other murder accused, Haedyn Rawson, 23, at the time, and who handed himself in to police after the stabbing, has now also been charged with murder and robbery.
Police initially said they did not believe he was involved.
Rawson, from Redbank Bank Plains, a former Ipswich Grammar graduate, was charged with Mr Swinbourne’s murder last week.
He was arrested after a massive manhunt during which he allegedly fled through the exclusive Sanctuary Cove resort.
Reinhardt, from Hope Island, was not brought in from the watchhouse when his case was briefly mentioned in Southport Magistrates Court on Wednesday afternoon.
Both his case and his co-accused’s fresh robbery charge were adjourned to March 26. Rawson’s murder charge had previously been listed for the same date.
The two men were remanded in custody and listed to appear by videolink at next week’s mention.
Police have revealed that they do not allege that the second man charged committed the actual stabbing, but believe he was culpable for the murder because he was allegedly involved in the robbery which led to Mr Swinbourne’s death.
Detective Inspector Mark Mooney, of Gold Coast CIB, said police would allege all three men had exchanged social media messages to arrange a drug deal.
He said Rawson and the 24-year-old later allegedly exchanged messages discussing plans to rob Mr Swinbourne of drugs.
Mr Swinbourne was stabbed in the chest during an altercation in his car at the Hope Island location.
The men had allegedly met at a music festival starring British DJ Fred Again at the Southport Spit the weekend before the fatal stabbing.
Rawson and his alleged accomplice had been “partying” and drinking together at the Boardwalk Tavern next to the radiology building before the incident, police say.
The 24-year-old was released without charge after surrendering to police at his Hope Island home soon after the alleged murder, but Det Insp Mooney said “extensive investigations” led to him being charged on Wednesday morning.
“We understood there was clearly one person involved in the physical murder,” he said.
“We never rule anyone out, the investigation was ongoing.
“We’re always looking at the bigger picture and determining what evidence we do have, and as result he’s been charged today.”
Det Insp Mooney said Mr Swinbourne’s family had been told of the second murder charge and were “very pleased but obviously distraught at the same time”
