An ATM has been dragged out of a Gold Coast tobacco shop after thieves used a ute to ram the property.
The incident occurred at a Peachey Rd business at Ormeau about 3am to reports of a ute being used to gain entry to the shop.
The offenders wrapped a chain around an ATM, dragging it outside the store. It’s believed they then smashed their way into the deposit box and stole cash before fleeing in the ute. .
There is significant damage to the front of the store.
Ride share driver Jaylan Yilmaz said he thought the store was on fire when he drove past.
“It turned out that it was like a security smoke system that had gone off,” he said.
Mr Yilmaz said police swarmed the area within minutes.
“One of the detectives pointed his flashlight at the ground and there were 3 gloves lying there in the car park.
“He looked around at the other cops and goes- are these any of yours? So they grabbed them and bagged them up for evidence.”
Forensics officers remained at the scene early on Wednesday and anyone who saw any suspicious activity or may have relevant dashcam or vision in the area at the time is asked to contact police.
