Heavy traffic has impacted drivers for hours on the northbound Bruce Highway out of Brisbane following a fire.
Drivers travelling from the Gateway Motorway toward the Bruce Highway faced delays of more than 30 minutes, while motorists travelling northbound along the Gympie Arterial Road experienced delays of more than 40 minutes, after a lane was closed due to the demolition of Storage King Burpengary.
Traffic has since cleared.
The storage facility was partially destroyed in a massive blaze on Wednesday.
An email sent to Storage King Burpengary customers on Friday revealed Queensland Fire Department submitted an urgent demolition request due to significant safety concerns and structural instability of the building.
“Fire Services are submitting an urgent request for demolition of the building containing units 500 to 774,” the email read.
“Demolition is scheduled to begin as early as Monday, 16th June. Unfortunately, due to the above ongoing safety concerns, neither staff nor customers will be permitted access to the site before demolition begins. Our dedicated team members are available on the hotline at 1800 299 503.”
Earlier, traffic had banked up for almost 25km after a lane was closed due to the demolition.
Queensland Police closed a northbound lane of the Bruce Hwy for 1km and several northbound access ramps.
In a statement, Queensland Police advised that the road closures are in effect due to the “demolition of a building structure”.
“Current road closures are in effect today due to the demolition of a building structure,” the statement read.
“The on ramp to Bruce Highway northbound from New Settlement Road/Old Gympie Road, Burpengary.
“On ramp to Bruce Highway northbound from Deception Bay Road over pass, Burpengary.
“The first lane (outside lane, closest to Old Gympie Road) of the Bruce Highway northbound will be closed starting at the Dave Masters Memorial Bridge (Overpass) for approximately 1 km.”
Kangaroo Bus Lines took to social media to advise of possible delays that may impact their services.
“Due to the fire and demolition at the Storage King facility on Old Gympie Rd, QPS has closed the first northbound lane of the Bruce Hwy and northbound access ramps,” the post read.
“We’re already seeing heavy congestion in the local area, and with the afternoon peak approaching, this may significantly impact our urban and school transport services.
“If you’re travelling on our services, please allow extra time and expect possible delays.”
Traffic had also banked for 18km from the Bruce Highway at Burpengary to the Gympie Arterial Rd at Carseldine.
Motorists were advised to expect delays.
