The dangerous dog was able enter the families home as their fence was under construction, giving the dog the opportunity to escape.

When Ms Osaka realised what the dog’s motives were, she quickly intervened, using her own body as a shield to protect her daughter.

“I just thought I needed to protect her,” she said.

The mother sustained bite wounds to her lower back.

Gold Coast City Council was investigating why the pitbull was not secured in the owner’s back yard.

If found responsible, the owner could face fines between $400 and $6000.

Last year, Brisbane City Council recorded 38 dog attacks a week, with a total annual bite tally of 1991.

The Gold Coast had 632 attacks recorded last year, a 17 per cent rise in the amount of attacks from the year before.
