More than 100 extra police will be sent to the Logan area after it was revealed there was a huge number of vacancies as officers continue to struggle with countless domestic violence jobs.

Acting Commissioner Shane Chelepy said he had met with Queensland Police Union president Shane Prior about resourcing the area.

The Courier-Mail this week revealed the Commissioner planned to send 120 additional troops to the southeast region at the same time the newspaper detailed there were as many as 40 vacant frontline positions needing to be filled.

Mr Chelepy said the Logan district was under pressure.

The service would look to fill 20 new positions in Logan district immediately, with another 80 new positions coming in the next financial year. Police have also given a commitment to fill vacant positions in Logan.

Mr Prior said the announcement was “long overdue”.

“To see an extra 100 police positions created for this district is very welcome,” he said.

“But it didn’t happen by accident, the Queensland Police Union has been advocating for this for at least the last six months.”

Police from other areas have been sent in to help police in the district while positions are being filled.
