There’ll be some extra happy campers up Tamborine Mountain way this weekend when a local service station gives away free petrol to punters who turn up ready to hit the great outdoors.
Mobil Mt Tamborine will be filling the tanks of the first 200 customers who pull in with vehicles loaded up with camping, fishing, boating and other outdoor gear on Saturday.
The privately-owned servo on Main Western Rd will have traffic controllers on duty, police are poised and extra staff on standby for an anticipated free fuel frenzy.
The giveaway is part of a promotion by beer brand Great Northern which spruiks itself as a drop best downed in the Queensland sun.
Great Northern marketing boss Ben Eyles said the “Adventure Fuel” campaign was part of a wider promotion with BCF encouraging people to “get into the great outdoors”.
“It’s an incentive to get people, particularly in and around Brisbane and the Gold Coast, to get out boating, camping and fishing and just enjoying life again after the pandemic and amid all the cost-of-living pressures,” he said.
“We chose Mt Tamborine because it’s a bit of a gateway into the hinterland.”
Mobil Mt Tamborine manager Doug Paine said he and his staff were bracing for an onslaught when the free fuel started flowing from 7am on Saturday.
“We’re only giving away free fuel to the first 200 people but I’m a bit worried 1000 could turn up,” he said with a chuckle.
“We have traffic control and the police have been notified so we should be all good. I’ve made sure all the tanks are topped up and I’ve got four or five extra staff on standby if it gets hectic.”
