AN LNP councillor has seized a web domain name that includes a slogan regularly used by Labor’s lord mayoral hopeful Patrick Condren, describing it as $15 “well spent”.

As the March council election draws closer, The Courier-Mail can reveal Walter-Taylor Ward councillor James Mackay has purchased the web domain name backpat.com.au – a hashtag Mr Condren regularly uses on social media.

In a tongue in cheek response, Mr Condren said he was appreciative that Cr Mackay had “signed up to the back Pat brigade”.

“He’s one of thousands who have indicated their support for this grassroots political movement,” he said.

The lord mayoral candidate said Labor was never going to use “back Pat” as the website for his campaign, saying the phrase was simply a “hashtag movement”.

“It’s something that we’re doing via … my Facebook page,” Mr Condren said.

“I had a bloke in the city on Friday afternoon saying he was going to back Pat. There’s a groundswell of support for it.

“If (the LNP) want to spend their money in that way, it’s entirely up to them.”

Mr Condren said he did not have a website, saying his campaign preferred to use platforms like Facebook and Instagram.

“We never wanted a website, so we’ve missed out on nothing,” he said.

When asked if he wanted to comment on the matter, Cr Mackay said it was “$15 of my own money well spent”.

“If Patrick Condren can’t buy his own website, he can’t run Australia’s largest council,” he said.

The LNP is currently using the web domain pat2020.com.au to fundraise for its election efforts.

Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner yesterday said he was focused on the things that “actually make a difference” and not on web domain names.

“Frankly, when it comes to those sort of issues, I think they’re the minor issues that some people can get caught up with that don’t really make a difference to the lives of the people in Brisbane,” he said.
