An electrical fault caused smoke alarms to go off at a South East Queensland hospital on Thursday night, sparking a widespread evacuation of patients.

One level of the Logan Hospital was evacuated after multiple fire alarms were activated when smoke began to issue from the building’s ducted heating.

Fourteen fire crews rushed to the Meadowbrook facility about 7.20pm on Thursday.

The floor where the first alarm went off and where the smoke was sighted was evacuated.

Queensland Fire and Emergency Services and electricity provider Energex later confirmed ducted heating as the source of the smoke.

About 10pm the hospital was declared safe and patients were left in the hands of hospital staff.

Logan and Beaudesert Health Service Executive Director Anne Coccetti said all patients at Logan Hospital are safe and the hospital remains open to anyone needing urgent care.

“As a precaution, 54 patients were relocated after smoke was identified on level 7 on Thursday night.”

“An electrical fault was identified in a non-clinical area in the plant room on level 8,” she said.

Ms Coccetti said staff responded swiftly to ensure everyone’s safety, and she would like to acknowledge their efforts as well as the response from Queensland Fire and Emergency Services and Queensland Police Service.

“The area has been deemed as safe by QFES and patients are being safely returned to the ward this evening.”
