The tragedy happened during a family gathering at a home outside of Eungella, about 80km west of Mackay on New Year’s Eve.

The girl was found unresponsive in a car at a home on Bee Creek Rd about 2pm on Sunday.

The RACQ CQ Rescue Helicopter was dispatched from Mackay and paramedics performed CPR on the young girl but she could not be revived.

It is believed about half a dozen family members were in attendance when the incident occurred and several cars could be seen at the property on Sunday afternoon, alongside police vehicles.

Police at the scene on Sunday said investigations were ongoing to establish how the child got into the car, with detectives from the Mackay Child Protection and Investigation Unit declaring a crime scene at the house.

Police are preparing a report for the coroner, but are not conducting a criminal investigation.
