Man sets fire to red-light camera

More than 550 drivers a week have been busted running red lights across Queensland in a growing trend that the state’s peak motoring body has warned could end in catastrophe.

New figures have revealed at least 4000 extra drivers were caught flouting red light laws in 2019, with almost 30,000 motorists slapped with a fine.

The figures, obtained by RACQ from Queensland Police, have uncovered the top 10 worst sites for red light camera infringements, with the Leopard St/Stanley St intersection at Woolloongabba topping the list.

There were 1787 fines dished out at the site in 2019, followed by the red light camera on the Gold Coast Highway in Broadbeach at the intersection of Margaret Ave, where there were 1582 fines.

RACQ spokeswoman Lauren Ritchie said the Kumbari Ave and Smith St intersection at Southport ranked third with 1309 fines given out.

“But this camera also has one of the highest rates, with one detected in every 1850 vehicles monitored,” she said.

“While most of the sites on the top 10 list are in the southeast, 1077 dangerous drivers at a notorious Cairns intersection were also nabbed – landing it in the top five.

“No matter where you are in Queensland, this dangerous behaviour is unacceptable and the penalty will earn you a $400 fine and three demerit points.”

Other hot spots included the Lutwyche Rd/Kedron Park Rd intersection at Kedron, as well as the Lutwyche Rd/Norman Ave intersection at Lutwyche.

The Main St/Vulture St intersection at Kangaroo Point also made the top ten, with 776 fines given out at a rate of 0.17 infringements per 1,000 vehicles.

“Whether you’re in a hurry, or not paying attention, there’s simply no excuse for running a red light,” Ms Ritchie said.

“When someone runs a red, it’s a pedestrian or cyclist that can be caught in the crossfire, and that can end in catastrophe.”
