A teenager charged after a French tourist was stabbed in Fortitude Valley earlier this week has been granted bail.

A court has heard how the tourist, 21, was attempting to break up a “particularly serious and violent” fight when he was attacked on Friday morning.

Jackson Martin and Jack David Pereira, both 18, appeared at Brisbane Magistrates Court on Saturday, charged over the stabbing.

It’s alleged Pereira had stabbed the tourist around 3.30am after the tourist intervened in a fight outside the Prince Consort Hotel.

Magistrate Julian Noud said Pereira allegedly produced a small knife and struck the man twice in the chest and once in the shoulder.

Martin reportedly attempted to pull Pereira away as he allegedly slashed the knife in the direction of a second person.

The man was taken to the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital in serious but stable condition.

Police allege that Martin and Pereira attempted to flee the scene on foot, but were arrested nearby on Costin Street.

The court heard both men allegedly attempted to dispose of their jackets - with Pereira’s found burned and Martin’s found dumped at a construction site, still containing his ID.

Police prosecutor Sergeant Val Crossley opposed Martin’s bail application on Saturday, noting he was the one who allegedly started the fight which preceded the stabbing.

The court heard Martin had not actually been charged over the preceding incident however, in which police claim he had thrown an unknown male against a wall near the Brunswick Street Mall.

It’s alleged Martin later struck a man who was attempting to intervene, and that both he and Pereira kicked that man unconscious.

Duty lawyer Kate Jamieson emphasised that Martin was alleged to have been a party to the offending, not the primary offender.

She submitted that strict bail conditions would appropriately ameliorate any risks Martin posed.

Magistrate Julian Noud granted Martin’s application for bail under conditions including that he adhere to a curfew, not attend the Fortitude Valley Safe Night precinct, have no contact with the co-accused or complainants, and that he abstain from illicit substances.

His matter was adjourned for mention on August 18.

Pereira made no application for bail and his matter was adjourned to August 25.

Supporters of both teenagers attended court but did not speak to media outside.

Pereira is charged with one count each of acts intended to maim/disfigure/disable, assault occasioning bodily harm while armed/in company, going armed so as to cause fear, and possession of a knife in a public place.

Martin is charged with a single count of acts intended to maim/disfigure/disable.
